Try-Math-A-Lon
Concept
The Try-Math-A-Lon competition is a competition between teams composed of high school students in grades 9-12. The purpose of the contest is to help groom these students for success in math/science courses.
The types of problems given to students include but are not limited to:
- Averages, percentages and ratios
- Unit conversions
- Decimals, scientific notation
- Literal expressions (algebraic word problems)
- Velocity and acceleration
- Area and volume calculations
The contest is partitioned into three events held in the order listed:
- Event 1: The Progress Assessment Test (PAT)
- Event 2: The Engineering Contest
- Event 3: The Quiz Bowl
Each team is awarded a numerical score in each of the three events. At the end of the competition the total points earned by each team is computed. The team with the highest point total is the winner.
The TMAL toolkit contains a detailed description of the competitions and their implementations.
